Patch, an inside row jumper, is a “stargazer” – a carousel animal that is looking upward toward the sky. He is so excited to be galloping around the carousel that his mouth is wide open as if to say, “Let’s go!”
When the Berrys bought property on the South Santiam River it was covered in blackberries and wild strawberries. Between that and their last name of Berry the name “Patch”, for Berry Patch, was a natural choice.
Patch wears a simple brown English-style saddle with blueberries and strawberries around and behind the back of the saddle. More berries are on his chest band and a small bouquet of berries is attached to his bridle. His blue saddle blanket, trimmed with gold tassels, sets off his shiny black coat. Bob and Mary were avid rock hounds and one of Bob’s carved stones, a cabochon, is on Patch’s breastplate.
