The Band Organ was sponsored by the Engel’s to honor two long-time friends and carnival glass enthusiasts, Dale Matheny and George Thomas. They all loved music. The organ was designed to encapsulate and honor love and friendship throughout Doug and Karen’s life. Carnival glass, which they have collected since the 1970s, inspired many of the designs such as the ferns, peacocks, roses, and poppies. A painting of the “Cathey House”, one of Albany’s beautiful historic houses, and Doug and Karen’s home, is prominently featured on the front of the music box. The birds represent two hummingbirds that come to the home year around. The angel broach on the front is a copy of a pin Karen was fond of and wore frequently. Their love of music will continue to be enjoyed by all who visit the carousel and listen to the Organ Music Box.
