Zulu, the African Serval
Sponsored byTom and Tricia Nickelson
Zulu is a serval cat that bounds around the inside row on the carousel. Servals are medium-sized spotted cats that live on the African savannas. They have very large ears and are known for their jumping ability.
Tom actually carved the majority of this animal. Even after he and his wife moved to California he “commuted” back and forth to Albany to continue this process. Zulu was an easy choice for Tom and Tricia because they owned a Savannah Cat named Zulu. Savannah Cats are domestic cats that are part serval.
Zulu is in a pouncing pose and is adorned with a flamingo, stretched out to form the back and wings of the saddle. The flamingo was fitting because at one time Tricia collected flamingos (lawn decorations and such). A saucy meerkat rests upon Zulu’s tail. The suggestion for the meerkat came from one of the carvers during an evening carving session.
