Angel, the Peacock: sponsored by Doug and Karen Engel

Angel, the Peacock: sponsored by Doug and Karen Engel

Angel is an elegant and exquisite peacock laced with special meaning and memories. The name “Angel” is a reference to the sponsor’s last name, which is German for the word “angel”. Angel is an alternate outside-row animal.

Doug and Karen’s love of carnival glass makes a glorious display on this animal. The bright iridescent colors on the peacock represent the many colors available in carnival glass. Peacock patterns are very prevalent in carnival glass, many being quite rare, beautiful, and highly collectible.

Angel’s saddle blanket is a fern and butterfly design, based on vintage carnival glass pieces. Carnival glass rose designs can be found on the saddle. Symbolizing Karen’s fondest for hummingbirds, one can be seen playfully riding along the side of the saddle.

Karen lost her battle with cancer on September 11, 2016. She had been a member of the Albany Historic Carousel Board of Directors since the Carousel’s inception and served as Treasurer until her illness prevented her from continuing.

Many years ago, Karen’s friends presented her with a golden angel pin. A beautiful version of that pin can be seen on Angel’s breastplate along with Karen’s name and the names of her friends.
